Spring Branch ISD Scores Big in National Education Scorecard
The Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) has achieved a significant milestone, being recognized as a “District on the Rise†in the latest Education Scorecard released by Harvard University. SBISD stands out as one of only 108 school districts nationwide—and the only district in Texas—to demonstrate accelerated academic growth in both reading and math compared to their peers.
Strategic Leadership and Focused Priorities
Since 2019, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Blaine has steered the district with an intense focus on foundational priorities: reading, math, and student supports starting from pre-kindergarten. This strategic approach, complemented by Career and Technical Education at the secondary level, has yielded the continued student growth and achievement highlighted in the scorecard.
“Our students’ success is a direct reflection of the relentless commitment and expertise of our teachers, principals, support staff, and school leaders across Spring Branch ISD,†said Jennifer Blaine, Superintendent of Schools.
The Blueprint for Success: Data and Vision
The Education Scorecard’s case study on SBISD attributes this success to several key factors: data-driven instruction, research-based best practices, early literacy and numeracy, and strong instructional leadership. Central to this success is the district’s T-2-4 vision, which ensures every graduate is prepared for a technical certificate, military training, or a two- or four-year college degree.
Community Engagement and Support
The recognition also shines a light on community-driven initiatives like the Reading Buddies program. This program pairs nearly 200 trained community volunteers with second-grade students for one-on-one literacy tutoring, providing critical early encouragement during a pivotal academic year.
A Culture of Collective Greatness
Serving over 31,600 students in Houston, SBISD continues to foster a culture of continuous improvement. This is the second consecutive year the district has received national acclaim, following its spotlight in last year’s Education Recovery Scorecard for exceeding pre-pandemic achievement levels.
“To be recognized two years in a row is a huge honor,†affirmed Dr. Blaine. “This recognition confirms that our entire SBISD Family lives our values every day, every minute, every way for Every Child.â€
